A back injury has forced Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum home from New Zealand's cricket tour of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
He has had a MRI scan and will return to New Zealand immediately for further review and to begin rehabilitation.
The Black Caps have one ODI and a Twenty20 match to play in Bangladesh before they travel to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and two T20s.
Black Caps physiotherapist Paul Close says the goal is to return McCullum to full fitness for the home series against the West Indies and India, starting with three Tests against the Windies in December.
"Brendon's back needs careful management - it's flared up and is giving him significant pain.
"The best course of action is getting him home for rehabilitation as soon as possible."
Kyle Mills will captain the side in the last two matches in Bangladesh, and for the Sri Lankan leg of the tour.
