Prized recruits Kyle Reimers and Chance Bateman played leading roles in Perth’s gritty 12-point victory over Peel at Brownes Stadium today.
Hawthorn premiership player Bateman was busy from the outset while Reimers had three goals before half time in a match played in warm conditions.
Each looks capable of wielding a powerful influence for the Demons who held firm to claim a 12.10 (82) to 9.16 (70) victory.
The only blight for Reimers was he had his number taken for striking Peel's Mathew Brown.
The Thunder produced a spirited brand of football under new coach Cam Shepherd to work their way back into the match after being outpointed early and will trouble sides in 2013.
Fremantle squad members Tom Sheridan and Peter Faulks did well for Peel along with Pat Travers and Matt Orzel.
Perth captain Paul Bevan kicked the opening goal of the match with Reimers booting two of the next three to stamp his mark on the game.
The Demons had stretched their lead to 28 points after a goal to Simon Donovan at the 20-minute mark.
Peel’s first goal came after the siren to signal the end of the first term, the home team ahead by 21 points at the first break.
Perth kicked two of the first three goals of the second quarter, Reimers slotting his third, to restore their lead to a commanding 27 points.
The Thunder produced a better brand of football from that point and goals to Craig Moller, James Flaherty and Tanner Smith whittled Perth’s lead to 10 points at half time.
Accurate kicking in the third quarter helped the Demons establish an 18-point lead at the last change, the home side hanging on for victory despite being held goalless in the final term.
The two clubs split the earlier grades, the Demons taking out the colts 13.10 (88) to 8.10 (58) and Peel hitting back to claim the reserves 14.8 (92) to 12.8 (80).
Scores were level mid-way through the final quarter in the reserves before the Thunder kicked consecutive goals to set up victory.SCOREBOARD
