An outstanding effort by prized recruit Jarrod Kayler-Thomson wasn't enough for Subiaco on Saturday night, the Lions losing to Medibank Stadium co-tenants East Perth by 17 points in a WAFL pre-season match.
Former Perth and Hawthorn left-footer Kayler-Thomson amassed 26 possessions, eight marks, two tackles and three inside 50s, and kicked two goals for the Lions.
But the Royals claimed the game 10.10 (70) to 7.11 (53).
Subiaco led 6.6 (42) to 1.4 (10) at half-time, only to be overrun by East Perth in the final two quarters.
Key forward Josh Smith, one of the favourites for the league's leading goal kicker award in 2013, had 13 possessions, eight marks and four hit-outs, but was wayward with 1.4 for the Royals.
Ben Randall and Rob Forrest, who missed big chunks of last season due to injury, also fared well for Subiaco, along with midfielder Jason Bristow and emerging ruckman David Madut.
Defending WAFL and Foxtel Cup premiers Claremont were quick out of the blocks with a polished 16.6 (102) to 12.8 (80) victory over Swan Districts at Claremont Oval.
Andrew Foster, Luke Blackwell, Ian Richardson, Andrew Browne, Jack Bradshaw and Ryan Neates fared well for the Tigers.
Former West Coast and Sydney big man Mark Seaby did enough to suggest he and Mitch Andrews will be a potent combination in the ruck for the Tigers.
Seaby had 22 possessions, while Andrews had 17 and kicked three goals.
