Tsonga cranks up after slow start at Hopman

Russell Reid, The West Australian December 30, 2012, 7:57 pm

Flamboyant Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga overcame a sluggish start to beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco 7-5 6-3 in the Hyundai Hopman Cup at Perth Arena tonight.

The world No.8 trailed 4-2 in the opening set and appeared to be rusty in his first match at Perth's $1 million mixed-teams event.

Left-hander Verdasco had three set points in the 10th game but could not close out the set.

Tsonga charged through the next two games and second set to take the match and put France 1-0 ahead in the night session.
