Anderson wins Hopman opener

South African beanpole Kevin Anderson has won the first tennis match at the new Perth Arena by beating Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the Hopman Cup.

Anderson, ranked No.37 in the world at the moment, beat the higher-ranked Verdasco (No.24) in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

It gave South Africa a 1-0 lead before the women's singles (Anabel Medina-Garrigues v Chanelle Scheepers) and the mixed doubles.
