Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will join a star-studded line-up for the 25th Hopman Cup at Perth Arena later this year.
The French fan favourite and world no.6 joins Serbian pair Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic, Germans Tommy Haas and Andrea Petkovic, Australian firebrand Bernard Tomic and multiple Grand Slam winner Venus Williams at the official mixed teams competition of the ITF.
Tournament director Steve Ayles said the field was one of the strongest in Hopman Cup history. He said players like Williams and Petkovic would be fit and ready to play at a far better level than their current rankings suggest.
“When it comes to January I think we’ll have a pretty strong field,” Ayles said.
“We’ve got three males (ranked) in the top 12 and I think it’s a pretty strong field.
“There are a lot of good combinations in there and a lot of teams that will provide a lot of depth to this event.”
Ayles said having every match on the main court at the new $550 million Perth Arena meant each match-up had to be attractive enough to lure fans to the event.
The arena roof will remain open throughout the tournament unless weather dictates it must be closed.
“The event will be an outdoor event and the roof will be open unless we have inclement weather conditions,” Ayles said.
“We’ll adopt a similar policy to the Australian Open, which is what the players want.
“They want to replicate those conditions and this is one of the areas that we can.”
The Hopman Cup runs from December 29 – January 5.
