Sara Errani has admitted fears of a radiation leak after last year's tsunami in Japan forced her to withdraw from a tournament in Tokyo.

Errani, who will play Czech gun Petra Kvitova in tomorrow’s Australian Open quarter-final, had previously cited only personal reasons for missing the event.

Kim Clijsters had also said she would consider not playing in the tournament because of the health risks and eventually withdrew with injury. Francesca Schiavone and Yanina Wickmayer also withdrew for personal reasons, while Serena Williams cited injury for her absence.

Errani was coy on the issue, but told thewest.com.au that she feared for her health after concerns of leaks from a damaged nuclear power plant following the March tsunami, which engulfed towns with water after an off-shore quake.

“It was a bit difficult to decide, but finally we decide to not go,” Errani said.

“Of course, it was difficult. You read something or see the TV and if you go, you know it’s not just tennis... it’s more than tennis.

“You have to decide and it’s not easy.”

Errani’s quarter-final appearance is her best at a grand slam and she said it would enhance the already fond regard she had for Australia.

“It’s incredible... I like very much Australia from always and to make the quarter-final, from now more,” she smiled.

See what Errani thinks of her chances against Kvitova in tomorrow’s The West Australian.
