Luckygray part-owner Troy Maver said Saturday week’s PB Lawrence Stakes 1400m) at Caulfield will reveal a lot about the Mid West galloper.

The Group 1 winner left for Melbourne on Monday after dominating the WA Racehorse Owners Association Awards last Saturday.

Luckygray took out two major awards in front of 430 people.

Part-owners, Maver, Ross Drage and Barry Mitchell, took home the awards for WA Horse of the Year and WA Racehorse Owners’ Association leading four-year-old and older after buying the gelding at the Magic Millions sales for $46,000.

Maver said the two awards were a great way to recognise the hard work that has gone into producing the galloper’s 10 wins and $1,135,675 stake earnings.

“As owners we just get to sit back and watch him run,” he said.

“Winning the awards was great and a way for us to thank everyone that is involved and everyone that helps him get up to race.

“Gino Poletti (trainer) has been great and put in a lot of work.”

His 2011-12 season was highlighted by a controversial Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) win and three autumn-winter campaign victories.

Maver said the Railways Stakes was the pinnacle of WA racing and a campaign over East was the galloper’s next challenge.

Maver said world-class gallopers Atlantic Jewel and Mosheen could line up against Luckygray in his first race in Melbourne on Saturday week.

Luckygray has had three first-up runs in his career for three wins and will also put his four race-winning streak on the line.

Maver said a good finish next Saturday would lay the foundations for the rest of the grey gelding’s trip.

“We will wait and see who he will run against, but if he runs to his potential he could figure in the top five,” he said.
