Perth Glory captain Jacob Burns will resist the temptation to make a swift return to A-League action as the WA side again faces injury worries ahead of a crucial clash against Sydney FC at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday.
An under-strength Glory all but secured a finals place with a 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners on Sunday and they will be forced to do it tough again this weekend.
Burns (hamstring) and Dutch winger Victor Sikora (hip) are still out of action, while goalkeeper Tando Velaphi (thigh) and marquee man Mile Sterjovski (back) are facing uphill battles to be fit.
Adriano Pellegrino has also joined a growing list of casualties, the midfielder nursing a knee injury at yesterday's City Beach recovery session.
Burns, who was a frustrated observer on Sunday, is hopeful of returning for Glory's final match of the regular season - at home to Brisbane Roar on Saturday week - but will not risk exacerbating the injury with finals on the horizon.
"We've got great medical staff and we'll be doing everything we can to get back as soon as possible without risking finals football," Burns said yesterday. "As far as (hamstring) tears go it could've been a lot worse. I'll just progress and step up or step back if I'm feeling it. When I'm not feeling it I'll be putting my hand up to come back in.
"I know that Sydney is out, for sure, and I'll target Brissie. I'd like to get a game in before the finals but if I'm still feeling it at all it's not worth the risk. Finals football is more important."
Glory performed admirably on Sunday without Burns, Sterjovski, Velaphi, Sikora and Branko Jelic, who was left out, as new signing Daniel McBreen scored a double to take his tally to four goals in as many games and Andrija Jukic got deserved reward for his recent endeavours with his first A-League goal.
The top six teams will contest the play-offs and those in the top four are guaranteed a home fixture. Glory are fourth, although Newcastle Jets will climb above them if they can beat North Queensland Fury in Townsville tonight.
Glory's win over the Mariners extended their winning streak to three matches - the club's longest run of victories in A-League history - after success against Adelaide United and Wellington Phoenix.
And Burns believes a rejuvenated Glory can continue that winning feeling against Sydney.
"I back us against Sydney and against Brisbane. And if that's the case, and we finish fourth or even higher, it's a great achievement," he said.
"To get a home final would be something special and I fancy us in finals football against any team."
If Glory can hang on to fourth place it is not known when and where their final would be played because a pop concert at ME Bank Stadium is scheduled to take place just a day before the proposed February 21 play-off.
Burns, Coyne and Sterjovski are all hoping to keep alive their World Cup ambitions by securing overseas loan moves to ensure they are playing in the lead-up to the tournament in South Africa.
They could yet clinch loan deals assuming there is interest from a club in a country with an open transfer window.
