Cornthwaite faces assault charge

AAP November 4, 2009, 12:06 pm

Adelaide United defender Robbie Cornthwaite has missed training to appear in the court on an assault charge.

But the 24-year-old will continue to be allowed to travel interstate with his team after being released from a formal bail agreement.

Cornthwaite appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of assault and refusing to give his name and address to police.

The charges relate to an alleged fight with a bouncer outside a city nightclub in August.

The court was told that a police bail agreement Cornthwaite signed did not impose a condition that he seek permission to travel interstate.

But a prosecutor said that was probably wrong in law.

Magistrate Joanne Tracey's solution was to cancel the bail agreement with the court relying on the player's public profile to ensure his appearance in future.

Cornthwaite is yet to answer the charges against him with Ms Tracey ordering him to appear in court again in December.

Adelaide United plays its next A-League match at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night with Cornthwaite expected to suit up against Brisbane Roar.
