Western Force back-rower Hugh McMeniman will miss the rest of the Wallabies Rugby Championship campaign and the spring tour to Europe with shoulder damage.
Wallabies medical staff ruled him out with a recurrence of the injury he first picked up against the Rebels in April, which led to him missing nine weeks of the Super Rugby season.
They decided that a complete reconstruction would be the best option. McMeniman will undergo surgery next week in Brisbane and be sidelined for six months.
The injury is a bitter blow to the 29-year-old who has a history of injury but battled back to start in new Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie’s inaugural Test side in Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup loss to New Zealand at ANZ Stadium.
McMeniman signed for the Force this season after three years in Japan. The Bledisloe Cup match was his 22nd Test and first since 2008 when he played against Wales at Millennium Stadium. The Wallabies travel to Wellington on Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s second Bledisloe Cup clash with the All Blacks at Westpac Stadium.
