Ron Quinton knows plenty about winning three-year-old fillies' classics, taking away a handful as a jockey before winning the 2002 VRC Oaks with Bulla Borghese as a trainer.
He will try to add another one to his resume as Crafty Irna takes on what he believes is the strongest AJC Australian Oaks (2400m) field for a long while at Randwick tomorrow.
The 100th edition of the classic includes the Australian Guineas and AJC Australian Derby winner Shamrocker, VRC Oaks heroine Brazilian Pulse and Mirjulisa Lass, who was dominant in winning the Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill a fortnight ago.
"We have run into the strongest Oaks I can remember for a long time," said Quinton, whose first AJC Oaks winner Analie also took out the Doncaster when the races were held on separate days in 1973.
"You always get a couple of nice fillies, but I can't remember the Australian Guineas and derby winner and the Melbourne Oaks winner being in this race before. You always have to respect the Vinery winner and Greg Hickman's filly (Mirjulisa Lass) was very good winning at Rosehill and looks like it will get the trip as well."
And you can add the Kiwi filly Dating, who was fourth in the New Zealand Oaks, to the mix.
Rosehill trainer Tim Martin, who has Vinery runner-up Fibrillation starting, agreed with Quinton.
"It's the toughest Oaks I have seen," Martin said.
"Usually you can go in a little confident with a filly like mine that will stay the mile-and-a-half, but I'm worried she might not be up to the class of a couple of the others in the race.
"I think she is a good chance of running in the first four, which is important for black type, but I would really like some rain because she is great in the wet, some of the others might struggle."
Punters have made Shamrocker favourite since her derby win, backing her from $3.50 on Monday to a $2.50 top pick.
