Plan Lucky, Peck fly the flag for Gulberti

Trainer Robert Gulberti hopes to have two questions answered when he saddles Plain Lucky and Peck in today's Carpet Paint Centre Broome Sprint (1300m) and XXXX Gold Broome Cup (2200m).

Player yesterday opened Plain Lucky a $2.05 favourite to boost his record to five wins from six starts at Broome in the $40,000 sprint with Peck sharing the top of betting with Hinzley, who chases a fifth straight Broome win, at $4.60 in the $100,000 cup.

Gulberti feels fortunate in his debut season as a trainer to have picked up such talented gallopers as Plain Lucky, Tower Of Lonhro and Peck from the stables of premier trainer Adam Durrant.

Gulberti, who has lived in Broome for the past 12 years, reported Plain Lucky and Peck to have pulled up well from their last starts, but he could not shake one lingering doubt.

"I bought Plain Lucky with a group of Broome people," Gulberti said. "Traditionally the Bel Esprits are known for bad legs.

"We have him happy, but like most of them he is probably at the end of his tether.

"He pulled up the best he has ever pulled up after his last win and we are holding our breath and hope he has a last win in him.

"The same horse (Peck) has to turn up. We've seen it before where they run big races first-up and the second time they don't go as well. The horse is in the same shape and we are really happy with his condition"

Gulberti's father Gary won successive sprints with Shake The Till (1988) and Le Bolt (1989) and trained Ibsen to run third to Liquidation, who is topweight on 62kg today, two years ago.

Gary searches for his first cup win with Galaxon ($15), who earned his ticket with a win over rivals Covered In Class and Pop's Revival over 1800m.
