Former turf star Scenic Blast has been out of the headlines for several months while recovering from a fracture in a box at Orange Grove.

The baldy-faced bay, nicknamed Clyde, has best friend Katut (named after the TV ad character) to keep him company while his fractured hind leg heals.

Scenic Blast fractured the leg in a track gallop on November 3 when he was being prepared by trainer Dan Morton for a comeback in the Group 1 weight-for-age Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.

Veterinary surgeon Kim Rose put four screws into the leg and the gelding has been under the care of trainer Sonja Price for the past three months.

Price also is an experienced veterinary nurse.

"The last thing we wanted was him to jump around and refracture the leg," Price said. "I had to wrap the leg from the fetlock joint up his cannon bone with lots of wrapping for three months.

"He still needs two wrappings to keep pressure on it.

"The leg was recently X-rayed and it has healed really well."

Price said Scenic Blast remained in top physical condition, despite being unable to move freely during his rehabilitation.

Miniature horse Katut has won the heart of the eight-year-old and the pair are inseparable.

"I put Katut next to him for company and they have bonded," Price said. "I have toys for him to play with to stop him getting bored.

"He also loves molasses in his feed and calls out for it."

Scenic Blast won the 2009 King's Stand Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot after qualifying for the heats of the Global Sprint series with his win in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) and Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

He raced in Global heats in Japan and in Hong Kong, but bled in the Hong Kong Sprint and was sent to John Shirreffs' stable in California before returning to Morton. He has been retired from the racetrack.
