Paul Stuart, riding the crest of a wave after his Group 1 double with Miata and Dyna Nalin, heads to Victoria this week in pursuit of the magical $1 million benchmark for his superstar stayer and a new challenge for his young star.
Stuart, 27, became the first trainer to win the Galaxy and Perth Cup on the same night when Miata blazed to an Australian stakes record-breaking win in the Cannington 715m distance feature on Saturday.
Then Dyna Nalin, backed from $9.10 into $7.10, swept home to nail Victorian raider Grigorieva Bale to win the $210,000 Perth Cup (530m).
Grant Langston, with Miss Crisp (Perth Cup) and Ghetto's Glider (Galaxy) in 1989, and Linda Britton, with Bliss Bale (Perth Cup) and Harvard Bale (Galaxy) in 1999, trained the double in the same year.
The cup and the Galaxy were not run on the same night until 2002.
Miata and Dyna Nalin are products of the Wheeler greyhound kennels in NSW. Nicole Wheeler-Whye is a part-owner with Stuart in Miata and Wheeler patriarch Paul Wheeler owns Dyna Nalin.
"When I first moved back to Perth, they (Wheelers) were the first people to support me by sending me a dog to train," Stuart said.
"I spent a lot of time working with them. They are like a second family to me."
Miata, unwanted as a $7000 pup and now the nation's highest earner with $671,508, heads into Saturday night's invitation-only Group 1 $75,000 Zoom Top (725m) at The Meadows, before running in the heats of the Group 1 $100,000 Australian Stayers Series (715m) at the same track on February 23.
"It is a big relief to have it over with," Stuart said about Miata's record-breaking win.
"Once she got to the front I was breathing a lot easier. There is always pressure but there was more this time with the record."She gets her ice-cream and cone, but it is a bit too hot for a hamburger. She'll be happy."
