The 50th year of touring car racing at Mount Panorama has been celebrated with a record four-day crowd of 207,205 attending the Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercars event.

It's the first time the crowd for the event has topped 200,000 and eclipses the mark of 193,647 achieved in 2006 following the death of icon Peter Brock several weeks before.

V8 Supercars chief executive David Malone said the numbers were "extraordinary", with the 57,939 attending Sunday's 1000km race well up on the 51,823 figure last year.

"It was very clear right from Thursday that this weekend was going to be something very, very special," Malone said.

"From day one everybody has been commenting on how many people are here and that has really shown in the final numbers.

"The whole track is packed, the campgrounds are buzzing and today people started coming in at 2am this morning, extraordinary."
