Tiger's game not far from being out of the woods

GENE STEPHAN, The West Australian November 1, 2011, 6:49 am

Tiger Woods will not be speaking publicly when he plays in an invitation-only VIP event at Burswood on Saturday.

However, regular practice partner Ian Baker-Finch has no reservations about commenting about Woods' bid to regain his world No.1 ranking starting with next week's Australian Open in Sydney.

Baker-Finch, the 1991 British Open winner, has had regular rounds with Woods at the Greg Norman-designed Medalist Golf Club in Florida where both live.

"His game is very solid, and has been for some time, but it is just a matter of competing more often and getting his mind into competition mode and not just thinking of the swing or fundamentals of the game," Baker-Finch said.

"He is fit and has practised hard but needs more opportunity to play under pressure to be competitive again."

Baker-Finch said Woods had competed in 25 tournaments a year for 10 years and was in contention or leading 99 per cent of the time.

He has been under that level of pressure only 10 times in the past three years because of injury or personal problems off the course.

"I would guess he probably believes he could be better than he ever was and that is why he has made the changes to his swing," Baker-Finch said.

Baker-Finch will also be in Perth this weekend playing the Handa Australian Senior Open at Lake Karrinyup alongside European Tour Senior Tour money leader Peter Fowler, Wayne Grady, Mike Harwood and Michael Clayton.
