Opener Rhett Lockyear seized on a late call-up to post his maiden domestic century and steer Tasmania to a hefty 7-300 against Victoria in Saturday's one-day match at the MCG.

Lockyear replaced injured allrounder Luke Butterworth (buttock) and made good his chance by smashing 111 from 98 balls in such quick time he reached three figures in the 30th over.

While the Tigers' innings slowed after Lockyear's departure in the 31st over, Travis Birt (66 from 54 balls) and the tailenders took the visitors to a big total in the late overs.

Captain George Bailey made 63.

All of Victoria's bowlers were expensive, a problem made worse because they selected only four specialist bowlers.

Shane Harwood (3-68) was the leading wicket taker but also the most expensive.

Tasmania's big total gives them a chance to post a second victory this competition, after a win and a loss from their opening two matches.

The Bushrangers will need to produce their greatest run chase in this format if they are to add to last Wednesday's win over South Australia.
