Luke Ronchi will quit the Warriors at the end of the season in a bid to resurrect his international career with New Zealand.

The WA wicketkeeper told his State team-mates of his intentions yesterday after being questioned by The West Australian.

Ronchi told WACA officials of the New Zealand approach several weeks ago but had not confirmed his intentions to join the Black Caps until recently.

He will be eligible to play for New Zealand on January 14 next year – four years after his final appearance for Australia – but hopes to be able to represent the Perth Scorchers at the Champions League this year.

Ronchi was born in New Zealand but moved to Perth as a baby with his family.

He qualifies automatically to play for his country of birth but must first complete the four-year quarantine period since last playing for Australia.

“I am only 30 and have got four or five good years of cricket left in me,” Ronchi told The West Australian this morning.

“This is an opportunity too good to miss.”

Ronchi’s departure is likely to see the WACA seek to recruit a new gloveman with Tasmania’s talented Tom Triffitt at the top of the wanted list.

A batting enigma who has nine State centuries and a one-day strike rate above 100, Ronchi also holds records for the most ducks in domestic one-dayers and as a Twenty20 opener.

His move will give him the opportunity to establish himself before the World Cup in 2014-15 while he could confront Australia in the six Tests between the countries in the 2015-16 summer.
