Draftees show form in Freo hit-out

Stephen Hill showed he was ready for a bumper 2015 with a sizzling display in Fremantle's second intra-club match at Fremantle Oval yesterday.

And draftees Lachie Weller and Connor Blakely enhanced their growing reputations with promising showings to push their case for selection in the NAB Chall- enge clash with Melbourne at Fremantle Oval on Thursday.

Assistant coach Michael Prior said it was a relief to negotiate another 80 minutes of football without any incident and revealed a plan to add flexibility to the team by throwing players around in different positions.

Hill's performance for the purple team, which was stacked with the Dockers' biggest stars, came after he was one of the Indigenous All-Stars' best in their loss to West Coast last Friday.

The speedster was at his free-wheeling best from a wing, booting two goals and setting up several others.

Hill, David Mundy and Matthew Pavlich were inclusions for the purple A team which smashed the white B side by 10 goals. Pavlich had an interesting tussle with Chris Mayne for a half before running laps alongside fellow veteran Luke McPharlin, who backed up from last Saturday's internal trial.

Michael Barlow, Lachie Neale and Jon Griffin evened up the midfield duel after lining up for the B team, with Tendai Mzungu, Mayne, Tom Sheridan and Paul Duffield also finding themselves out of the first-choice side with first-year pair Weller and Blakely.

Griffin, Duffield, Sheridan, Hayden Crozier, Mayne and Blakely switched between the sides.

Michael Walters spent time on the ball and was lively on his way to three majors before being pulled out of the match at three-quarter time, along with star defender Michael Johnson, who continues to make excellent progress from a back injury.

Nick Suban continued his strong summer with two goals, while Mundy didn't miss a beat in his first hit-out of the year.

Mundy, 29, was flattered at comparisons made between him and tall midfield prospect Blakely.

"I think he's a bit quicker and a bit better than I was when I was 18," Mundy said.

"Those two (Weller and Blakely) haven't missed a beat this summer and they've been with the main group the whole time.

"They're certainly putting their hand up and they've done everything they can."

Nat Fyfe, Aaron Sandilands, Ryan Crowley, Zac Dawson, Matt Taberner and Garrick Ibbotson missed yesterday's match.
