Hurt Banfield a blow for Swans

Todd Banfield's return to Swan Districts has lasted just one week, with the former Brisbane and Richmond forward facing an extended stint on the sidelines with a broken leg.

The 24-year-old was set to bolster the goal-kicking options at his old club, having returned to training at Steel Blue Oval this month after being de-listed by the Tigers.

But the 53-game AFL player is instead facing a prolonged rehabilitation after breaking the tibia in his right leg during match simulation last week.

Swans coach Greg Harding said Banfield's recovery was expected to take at least four months.

"That's a big blow for us," Harding said.

"He cracked the head off his tibia, so had to have a plate and some screws inserted last Friday.

"We're hoping for the best, but it looks like we're going to miss him for a big part of the season at the very least."

·West Perth have re-signed former Port Adelaide defender Michael Pettigrew.

The 29-year-old returns after a 12-month break, having narrowly missed out on playing in the Falcons' 2013 grand final win because of injury.

Meanwhile, Peel Thunder have signed one-time Greater Western Sydney and Perth player Gerald Ugle.

·Subiaco have shelved plans to play a one-off match against SANFL premiers Norwood in March.

The showcase fixture would have been held in South Australia, but will not go ahead after efforts to secure funding partners failed.
