Payments to AFL players swelled to almost $190 million in 2014, with the average wage paid to players under the league's Total Player Payments allowance growing to more than $283,000.

Figures released today by the AFL showed that the league's 719 listed players were paid a total of $188.9million dollars, up from $181.5 million in 2013.

The average players wage rose from $265,000.

But the number of players earning a million dollars a season dropped from five in 2013 to just two in 2014.

Gold Coast skipper Gary Ablett is certain to be one of the two million dollar players.

Two players were paid between $900,000 and a million dollars while a further six received between $800,000 and $900,000.

The most common pay bracket in the AFL is the $100,000 to $200,000 bracket with 198 of the league's 719 players. More than half of the league's players (429) receive more than $200,000 a season.
