Murray Newman has returned to full training as West Coast started their final week of the pre-season before Christmas.

The Eagles forward has been sidelined for the past month after badly spraining an ankle in a training incident.

But Newman was back out on the track at Patersons Stadium this morning taking part in end-to-end skills work as the bulk of the playing group practised their ball movement.

Second-year defender Tom Barrass competed well against Will Schofield, Shannon Hurn and even ruck coach Dean Cox as he presses for an AFL debut next season.

Matt Rosa (pectoral muscle/ankle), Elliot Yeo (hand) and Xavier Ellis (AC joint) spent much of the session running laps on the sidelines.

Eric Mackenzie, Jack Darling, Jeremy McGovern and Mark Hutchings were all still in the rehabilitation group and did little other than jogging and handball exercises.

But the quartet is expected to return to full training early in the new year as West Coast wind up for the NAB Challenge series starting in February.

Scott Selwood (ankle) also did little in the session. He is expected to return to running until midway though January as he recovers from secondary ankle surgery.
