Crows leave it late in AFL trade period

Adelaide had been eyeing off Hawthorn ruckman Luke Lowden for two years.

But they left it late to secure Lowden and fellow Hawk Kyle Cheney in AFL trade period, lodging the paperwork with approximately one minute remaining on Thursday.

The Crows, previously a low-key player in proceedings, completed the final two deals of the post-season frenzy.

Both were complex.

Hawthorn gave up Cheney, Lowden and draft picks No. 43, No.47 and No.59.

The Crows compensated them with picks No.31, No.50 and No.68.

They then swapped draft picks with Geelong in the final trade of the year, the Crows parting with No.10 and No.47 to receive No.14 and No.35.

"We're not a club that mucks around too much .. there were a few other things going on," Crows list manager David Noble said.

"We wanted to make sure ... we retained a (draft) position in the second round.

"Particularly where we've been the last two or three years with our positions (making a preliminary final in 2012 and being barred from the first two rounds of the 2013 draft).

"First and second round were really important to us and we were pleased we were able to trade our way back to that point by about 1.59pm."

Lowden debuted this season after being drafted in 2008, but it remains his one match at AFL level.

Ex-Melbourne defender Cheney played nine games with the Hawks this year.

Noble suggested both could be part of the Crows' best 22 in round one next season.

"Possibly ... both of those guys are desperate to create an opportunity for themselves at a new football club," he said.

"Whether they can get in there, that's up to them. I know Walshy (new coach Phil Walsh) will give them every opportunity."

Noble said he expected to finalise a new contract for midfielder Jarryd Lyons soon.
