Brown urges Dogs to get Boyd

Former Western Bulldogs star Nathan Brown has urged the club to do whatever it takes to convince Greater Western Sydney to trade key forward Tom Boyd.

Boyd yesterday told the Giants that he wanted to play for the Dogs, just 12 months after being chosen with the No.1 pick.

With captain Ryan Griffen asking to join the Giants, the Bulldogs have said they are prepared to accept a straight swap. But GWS immediately said they would not trade Boyd "under any circumstances".

Brown, who played 137 games for the club before moving to Richmond, said the Bulldogs should make the Giants an offer too good to refuse. He suggested the Dogs offer GWS pick six and Griffen in a deal which would be "overs" but could set up the club for the next 10 years.

"It's harder to get Tom Boyd out of Greater Western Sydney than it is to get Ryan Griffen out of the Western Bulldogs," Brown told AFL Trade Radio.

"The Bulldogs would probably lose on the face of it but in the long term I reckon you'd be a big winner. What you are getting is a key-position player. Midfielders are a dime a dozen."

With Jonathon Patton sidelined next year as he overcomes his second knee reconstruction and Kristian Jaksch to be traded to a Victorian club, the Giants can ill afford to lose another power forward.

Surprisingly, Bulldogs president Peter Gordon told the club's website that he would be contacting GWS chairman Tony Shepherd to discuss a potential trade.

"Managed sensibly with mature heads, this can be a win for both clubs," Gordon said.

Only one trade was completed yesterday. As expected, Geelong traded Allen Christensen to Brisbane for pick 21 after he revealed he wanted to move to Queensland for personal reasons.
