COLTS: Spotlight on Waterman

Chris and Alec Waterman.

West Coast father-son prospect Alec Waterman will have one final chance to impress the club’s recruiting staff when he attempts to guide Claremont to its second colts premiership in as many years against Swan Districts at Patersons Stadium tomorrow.

But capturing the flag will not be an easy task against a Swans side which finished the season four games clear on top of the ladder and boast two of the season’s top five goals kickers in Nelson Ansey and Robert Mostert.

The Eagles have yet to confirm their intentions regarding the son of dual premiership player Chris Waterman, but must make a decision before noon on October 3, the deadline for father-son nominations.

The teenager put himself in the frame for an AFL future last season, starring for the WA under-18 side as a bottom-aged player and being named Mel Whinnen medallist as best on ground in the colts grand final.

Waterman failed to hit the same heights at this year’s under-18 championships but has lifted considerably in the colts finals, finishing with 24 disposals and nine clearances in the Tigers’ one-point preliminary final win over South Fremantle last week.

Swan Districts will go into tomorrow’s game attempting to win their first colts premiership since 2008.

Their success so far this season is remarkable considering the best young Swans have regularly been selected in the league side rather than the colts.

This year’s Jack Clarke medallist Alby Dean and fellow midfielder Jason Daniels have been two young stars to put their names in lights.

While Swans have had to rely on lesser lights, the Tigers side will feature a host of AIS-AFL graduates and under-18 guns including Ryan Lim, Jared Hardisty and Sam Bevan.
