West Coast ruckman Dean Cox said yesterday that the AFL's brand had been tarnished by revelations about the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport but maintained the Eagles were clean.

Cox said the Australian Crime Commission's damning report into drugs and organised crime in sport and the AFL and ASADA investigation into possible use of performance-enhancing drugs at Essendon had put a cloud over the whole competition.

The six times All-Australian did not see the scandal coming.

Cox, 31, said he currently only took multivitamins. When he first came to West Coast as a skinny rookie in 2001 he had used creatine and protein shakes but mostly bulked up through hard work.

"I don't take any supplements," he said. "Our football club ticks off everything before it comes into a player's hands and we have got some great people at the footy club who look after that."

The veteran said the club's sport science department was on the cutting edge of technology but did not step over the line.

"They have never asked us to do anything (outside the rules)," Cox said. "I trust them with everything they put in front of me."
