Former Melbourne player Liam Jurrah has been charged with drink driving after tests recorded him at more than five times the legal limit on Monday.

Police reportedly suspected Jurrah of being under the influence of alcohol when he arrived at a north Adelaide residence where they were dealing with another issue.

"The 24-year-old from Elizabeth was detained after he appeared affected by alcohol and then breath tested returning a reading of 0.269, more than five times the legal limit of 0.05," South Australian police said in a statement.

"The man was reported for driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the prescribed level of alcohol and breaching a probationary licence.

"His driver's licence has been disqualified for 12 months and he will be summonsed to appear in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court at a date to be decided."

The forward, who was set to play in the Port Adelaide's SANFL this season, also faces charges of aggravated assault in the Northern Territory in March.

After a promising start to his AFL career, where he kicked 84 goals in 34 games for the Demons, the alleged assault in March of last year and injury limited him to just one appearance in the 2012 campaign.
