West Coast coach John Worsfold has declared forward Josh Kennedy to be almost a certain starter for this Saturday’s critical clash against Collingwood at Patersons Stadium.Speaking at his weekly press conference on Wednesday morning, Worsfold considered Kennedy ready to play on the back of a successful comeback for East Fremantle in the WAFL last Sunday when he kicked two goals from six marks and 10 possessions.
The only thing Worsfold is not yet sure about is whether Kennedy will be in his starting 21 or will don the green substitute’s vest.“We have to work that out but I would expect that he would be in the squad,” he said.
Kennedy showed his capacity to perform off a limited build up when he kicked eight goals in West Coast’s round one win over the Western Bulldogs but Worsfold said that performance would not be a factor in selectors picking him this week.
“It is nothing really to do with round one,” he said. “He is basically trained up, getting ready to play footy so at some point you start playing. Our expectations are that he comes in and plays his role, does his best for the team.”
Kennedy hasn’t played since the club’s round five win against Richmond when he suffered a serious foot injury.
“It is just good to see him getting a chance to play footy,” Worsfold said. “He has got a smile on his face and he loves playing the game. That is what he is all about.”
“In the real big picture he has worked his backside off after a really serious injury to wan to play footy again.”
“Kennedy in our forward line is great for us. It means that someone in that forward line probably misses out and we have to weigh all those things up but we have to pick our best team and we think he is definitely in our best team.Worsfold also expected forward Brad Dick, who kicked six goals for East Fremantle at the weekend, to come into strong contention to play against his old club.
