Fremantle forward Chris Mayne says their primary target will be to lock down on West Coast’s scoring firepower to secure a win in Saturday’s crunch western derby.

The Eagles showed against Brisbane at Patersons Stadium yesterday just how much weaponry they can bring to bear in terms of goal scoring options.

Jack Darling booted a season-high five goals, while the returning Josh Hill chimed in with four and Nic Naitanui three to go with a best-on-ground performance.

West Coast had 15 individual goal scorers in total in their final score of 28.7.

The Dockers conversely kicked only 11 goals in yesterday’s slug fest against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

They similarly managed just five majors for the day in their round nine derby loss earlier this year.

Mayne indicated the club would again seek to avoid a shootout.

“The aim for us will be to limit their scores and obviously inside-50s and really lock the ball in our forward half, which pretty much every AFL club tries to do these days,” Mayne said.

“I know that this week it’ll definitely be a battle. It’s something that the derby always provides.

“I think we’re really looking forward to the challenge.

“They’ve got the last three over us and this time in front of our fans it’s important for them to get one back for them.”

Mayne said the playing group had been disappointed with the way they finished off their 27-point win over the Power.

The Dockers booted five goals in the first term and threatened to blow out the margin for a much-needed percentage booster, but were ultimately outscored by Port in the second half.

“Especially with the way we played in the first half, that’s how we want to play every game,” Mayne said.

“If we play like that we can definitely challenge the top sides.

“It’s definitely disappointing in the way we finished the second half, but the importance is that we did have the four points and that’s crucial.

“If we keep winning then percentage and the margin won’t matter towards the end of the year.”
