Battle for LeCras' spot a long game

Gerrick Weedon says the battle to fill Mark LeCras' spot at West Coast won't be decided on one performance so all the players have to stand up throughout the NAB Cup to be considered for round one.

Weedon kicked three goals during West Coast's wins over Essendon and Fremantle last Sunday to be the leading goal kicker. He also laid six tackles and had 10 possessions, just days after LeCras suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Former Western Bulldog Josh Hill and upgraded rookie Ashton Hams also performed well.

But Weedon said the coaches wouldn't pick the round-one team for several weeks so there was plenty of work to do.

"We have to play well for longer than that," Weedon said. "If you perform well in a lot of games, you're more of a chance than if you only play well in one.

"There's five of us blokes fighting for that spot so you've just got to focus on the team stuff and do your best."

Weedon's tackling set the tone for the way West Coast played during the NAB Cup opener.

He chased down young Bomber Anthony Long in the opening minutes of the first game, won a free kick for holding the ball and kicked the goal.

The Eagles were relentless with their tackling against Fremantle, laying 28 tackles. Only the Western Bulldogs' tally of 32 against Collingwood was higher in last week's games.

"That was my mindset. I went out there to try and tackle," Weedon said. "The focus is to keep locking it in the forward 50 and go from there."

Weedon made his debut last year but played just one game and spent the rest of the season in the WAFL.

He played in Claremont's premiership team, but the 20-year-old said he wouldn't look back on 2011 believing he had achieved much.

"I've got a lot of improvement to go so I have to keep focused on my goals. Last year was pretty average," he said.

"This has been my best pre- season. I'm working my way through and now I'm where I want to be."

The Eagles' next NAB Cup match is against Port Adelaide in Mandurah tomorrow week. Then they face St Kilda at Patersons Stadium on March 10.

Weedon said he was keen to play as many pre-season games as possible in a bid to press for selection in round one.
