Margaret River will host the world’s best windsurfers next month after the region again secured a spot on the burgeoning Windsurfing WA tour.

International stars of the sport including Switzerland’s two time Professional Windsurfing Association world champion Karin Jaggi, Holland’s Peter Volwater and Australia’s Scott McKercher are expected to take on Surfers Point’s world famous break in the South Weekend event on February 16 and 17.

Windsurfing WA committee member Mark Slade told the Times last year’s inaugural event proved popular with athletes and spectators and he expected more competitors to hit the water this year.

“Last year we had about 25 people for the wave event, but this season we’ve had up to 50-odd competitors each event,” Mr Slade said.

“We’re taking online registrations and promoting the event more to get a bigger field this year.”

Next month’s event is expected to include a freestyle and race component in addition to wave riding fixtures, Mr Slade said.

A fancy dress themed event was also an option. Mr Slade said the committee was seeking the help of at least two volunteer jet skiers to help with competitor safety for the two-day event.

“Safety is always a concern for sports today and one or two jet skis on hand to provide assistance in the case of equipment breakage are needed,” he said.

“Finding people to help with this is always a challenge (and) Windsurfing WA can help with expenses in this regard.

“If there was a local Margaret River sailor who was prepared to coordinate this that would be perfect.”

He said help was also needed to set up stands and man and operate a registration point. Anyone willing to help is encouraged to email info@windsurfingwa.org.au.
