Gun four-year-old Full Reign should be among the leading fancies for next month’s $400,000 Perth Cup, according to trainer Matt Giadresco.
After a drop in class, the Blackfriars gelding has notched impressive victories in its past two starts at Ascot and was nominated for the Group 2 staying feature last week.
Full Reign raised eyebrows last start when he turned fifth before charging home to make a statement with a one-and-a-quarter length triumph from Big Josh and Uncle George.
“He’s still only on his second prep as a race horse,” Giadresco said.
“He’s still immature, but (based) on his last win if he continues to run like that and win like that he’ll have every chance of being competitive (in the Perth Cup).”
The wins came after splutters in the $80,000 Northerly Stakes (1400m) when eighth and $125,000 Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) when fifth.
“He didn’t have any luck in the bigger races. He was blocked for a run in the Northerly and caught wide in the other one,” Giadresco said.
Full Reign, a winner of $154,450 from 11 starts including five wins, would be able to handle the 2400m journey of the Cup, according to Giadresco.
The galloper’s longest conquest was over 1800m last start, but Full Reign will get an opportunity to stretch his legs over 2200m midweek at Ascot on December 19 — his only remaining outing enroute to the Cup.
Full Reign made a bright start to his preparation when a $9 first-up winner at Belmont Park over 1300m on October 13.
“He is a staying type,” Giadresco said.
“He won his sprint race this prep when he was fresh but he is looking for more ground.”
Giadresco also revealed Full Reign had been headed towards the lucrative middle distance Group 1 features of the $1 million Railway Stakes and $500,000 Kingston Town Classic, but was more suited to the Perth Cup.
“The horse is going well,” Giadresco said.
“He’s won three out of his five starts (this time in) and is just going up through his classes.
“He should be one of the fancies.”Full Reign was paying $34 when Perth Cup markets opened with Player on yesterday. The race will be run on January 1.
