The Busselton Margaret River Cricket Association took out the A-grade title at Country Week for the first time in 104 years last week.
The BMRCA Hunters returned from a hot, humid, but ultimately successful week in Perth, beating Geraldton in the grand final at Murdoch University.
Hawks’ players Martin Head (49 not out) and Michael Provis (27 not out) saw the side home much to the glee of supporters who had made the trip to Perth.
The Hunters were bolstered by a strong contingent of Margaret River Hawks players and started the competition by defeating arch rivals Bunbury by 42 runs.
The team went into their danger game against Albany full of confidence. Ryan Miller starred against last year’s champions with 68 not out but the team went down by just two runs.
It was Martin Head’s turn for runs in Tuesday’s win against Williams, scoring a half century before Matty Kent’s tight bowling and Paul Altman’s three wickets helped to dismiss Williams for 149.
Day three saw Miller star with 67. His skipper, the Hawks’ Wes Slater, contributed 47 in a total of 243 before Kent’s two wickets helped keep Upper Great Southern to 226.
With Monday’s loss to Albany, the BMRCA needed to beat Harvey on day five to play in the grand final.
Head and Provis helped the side to a win, earning them a grand-final spot against Geraldton.
BMRCA lost the toss and were sent into the field.
Geraldton were left to rue that decision after several early wickets to Dave Mackay.
Hawk Dechlan Brennan took one of the catches of the tournament to have Geraldton three wickets down early, while his club teammate Michael Provis took three wickets to help dismiss Geraldton for just 140 runs.
Hawks and association skipper Slater opened the batting with Danny Hatton and looked in control until dismissed LBW for 31.
This brought Miller and Head together.
BMRCA looked in trouble when Miller was dismissed for a golden duck.
When John Lloyd was out two balls later, the Hunters were 5-78 and Provis strode out to the crease.
Provis was unnerved together with Head they steadied the ship and started to accumulate runs.
Soon enough the total was in reach and, with a pull shot to the boundary, Head brought up the winning runs.'The West Australian' is a trademark of West Australian Newspapers Limited 2012.
