The 14-year-old won a wildcard spot into the elite field after winning Yallingup’s Taj’s Small Fries for the third consecutive time earlier this month.
The youngest surfer in the field, Robinson proved age is no barrier as he took down two of the events favoured surfers in Dale Staples and Caue Wood in the first heat of the event.
Staples was seeded fifth in the event, while Wood was 21st.
Robinson was sitting in third position with 45 seconds remaining on the clock in the heat when he took off on a big wave, threw himself into a pair of big turns and launched into an alley-oop aerial, scoring an 8.60 and jumped into 1st position.
Bad weather brought on two lay days at the event.'The West Australian' is a trademark of West Australian Newspapers Limited 2012.
