Organisers of a windsurfing event set to take place in Margaret River next month say the competition will not go ahead unless locals come to the party.
Windsurfing WA secretary Mark Slade told the Times the organisation had permits to run a wave competition event at Surfers Point on either February 5-6 or 11-12, but the group needed to muster two jet ski riders and support staff to get it off the ground.
Mr Slade said finding a pair of jet skiers who could offer a weekend’s service to ensure the safety of the sailors was priority number one.
“Safety is always a concern for sports today and one or two jet skis on hand to provide assistance in the case of equipment breakage are needed,” he said.
“Finding people to help with this is always a challenge (and) Windsurfing WA can help with expenses in this regard.
“If there was a local Margaret River sailor who was prepared to coordinate this, that would be perfect.”
Help is also needed to set up stands and man and operate a registration point.
The event, if it were to get off the ground, will attract some of the biggest names in professional windsurfing.
Mr Slade expected a big field of nearly 50 competitors to take on the region’s famed Mainbreak in a competition that would have sailors going head-to-head in 10-minute heats and trying to pull off big jumps and intricate manoeuvres.
