Bike ride caution from police

Manjimup police are reminding people to take extra care on the roads during the staging of The West Australian Great Bike Ride which rolls out of Manjimup this Saturday.

Including cyclists, support crews and spectators, it is expected there will be up to 1500 people in Manjimup for the event.

Bicycle Victoria ride coordinator Adam Renn said riders would leave their designated campsites between 7am and 9am each day.

‘‘There will be an almost constant stream of bike riders on the road until the majority reach the next campsite between 1pm and 5pm,’’ Mr Renn said.

He urged motorists to be patient with cyclists, suggesting people allow some extra time for their journey and leave at least 1.5m clearance when overtaking.

Manjimup officer-in-charge Sgt David White said motorists would need to take extra care to ensure the safety of everyone throughout the event.

‘‘People need to be mindful that there are going to be a lot more cyclists on the roads and drivers need to be vigilant and be patient,’’ Sgt White said.

‘‘They (the cyclists) are here to enjoy themselves so let’s make them welcome.’’

An additional police contingent will follow the cyclists throughout their nine day journey through the South West.
