Point works start

Works on the Margaret River Surfers Point project are due to start ahead of schedule this month.

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has finalised negotiations with Tate Construction for upgrades to the amenities, which were expected to start on January 21.

The existing toilet facilities will be kept in service as long as possible while building takes place behind them.

A tender process has also been completed for the stairs and boardwalks, with contracts awarded to Down South Construction, Bluewater Building Company and True North Building builders for three separate works packages, including rebuilding beach access ways lost during the 2011 bushfires.

Demolition and preparation is expected to occur later this month, with the main stairs closed from January 28, to reopen on March 11 before the Margaret River Drug Aware Pro.

Project manager Wayne Prangnell said changes were being made to the scope to make it easier for contractors and tenders will be readvertised by the end of January.

Progress on roadworks and parking will now start after Easter.
