A man who was lying on a South West highway has been flown to Perth with serious injuries after he was run over by a car this morning.

The RAC rescue helicopter was sent to Donnybrook Hospital to transport the man, who suffered multiple fractures, to Royal Perth Hospital about 4.47am, according to a St John Ambulance spokesman.

Police say the man was lying on South Western Highway, near Newlands Road, when he was run over about 3.55am.

He was taken to Donnybrook Hospital but is being taken to Perth because of the severity of his injuries.

The helicopter is expected to arrive at the hospital some time before 8am.
