Firies look to horror season

The Bunbury Bushfire Brigade is seeking more volunteers as it prepares for what is expected to be a busy bushfire season.

The brigade has about 20 volunteers but is calling for more to step forward to help, not only onthe frontline, butin administration, communications and other supporting roles.

Brigade captain Terri Kowal said now was the perfect time to sign up because it gave people time to undertake training.

‘‘Some people may think work won’t let them off to go to a fire but they may be surprised that they will, or they may be able to come for a few hours after a fire,’’ Mrs Kowal said.

‘‘We are also in desperate need of those willing to work behind the scenes and not necessarily out on the fire front, such as making food and fundraising.’’

The long-time volunteer said the role was rewarding— even in the face of devastation a wildfire could cause.

‘‘We attended the Margaret River bushfires and while it was devastating and broke our hearts to see people lose their homes, it was also great to be part of a team which saved people’s homes,’’ she said.

‘‘Getting out and helping people and the wider community is good for the heart.’’

Volunteers attend an average of 20 bushfires each season.
