Fishermen are set to renew their push for more access to WA dams used for drinking water after the State Government's review into the ban on recreation near potable water supplies did not recommend overturning the ban.

A Department of Water draft report released this week has recommended upholding the ban but allowing more access to 11 water sources across WA - including the Wellington Dam near Collie - which are no longer used for drinking water.

The refusal to overturn the ban has frustrated fishing group Recfishwest, which said WA's laws on fishing in drinking water dams were among the most restrictive.

The department said the draft report was guided by a 2009 parliamentary committee review, which recommended upholding the ban on swimming or fishing in public drinking water sources.

It said the policy would not be overturned as the committee found the risk of increased recreation near dams outweighed the benefit.
