How is this for irony? I have just been given the WA Wine Press Club Media Award.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very honoured, especially given some of the esteemed winners prior to myself.
But, for someone that doesn’t really take this whole thing too seriously, isn’t paid for what I do, nor even considers it a career, it certainly was somewhat of a surprise.
Does that mean that I now have to take everything seriously?
Which brings me to the wine.
Given that hope springs eternal and the warmer weather is just around the corner, in the next couple of weeks, I’m going to look at the whites in the collection to be reviewed.
The first bottle I’ve put my hand on is the Xanadu sauvignon blanc semillon 2012.
While I’ve tasted quite a few 2012 whites, I think this is the first I’m reviewing.
It was another warm and early vintage in Margaret River, with some record temperatures at the end of January around Australia Day, which can kind of “blow off” some fruit characters from varieties like sem and sauv.
Thus the expectations aren’t too high.
Given the early heat, I’m actually quite surprised at how much flavour this wine has.
It’s really fresh, vibrant and zesty and is really, really moreish.
Also the alcohol is down around 12.5 per cent which adds to the lighter, fresher characters of the wine.
As soon as it poured, it’s got awesome heady lemongrass and ‘wafers stuck in a bowl of fruit salad’ flavour.
On the palate, it really is a mouth full of limes, pineapple, guava, kiwi fruit, and just about any other zesty fruit descriptor you could throw out.
I honesty just want to keep sipping this as the finish is crisp and lightly pithy (like the white stuff between an orange’s skin and the flesh) which makes you salivate and just want another.
The guys at Xanadu are really turning it on these days and this is further proof that they are one of the best all round wineries in town.
Expect to see this on the list at Wino’s when we reopen on Tuesday. To win a bottle send the name of the wine and your contact details to PO BOX 204, Busselton, WA 6280.
