Storytelling, centred on people and places, continues to drive country-folk musician Chris Edmondson, who returns to the Capes region boasting a long-awaited new album.
Having lived and played in most of regional WA for more than a decade, the now Denmark-based songwriter decided it was time to cement a second collection of songs last year, to create his first album since 2004.
Tracked over three days in June and July and produced at Lollybox Studios just outside Margaret River, Collecting Cars documents the dusty inner lives of a whole range of folks who live in the South West in particular, or at least people who were travelling through.
The project features a collaboration between Edmondson, with his meticulously crafted musical tales of hewn cut characters, and industry veteran Noah Shilkin’s beautifully considered piano arrangements.
Interest in the album has been building with Chris booked to perform at a variety of WA music festivals and the track Football Star, about any country footballer’s glory days, being picked up by WIN Television to feature on its Off the Boot program.
The title track Collecting Cars tells the story of a man left with little else in his life but a hundred acres to fill with car bodies of almost every make and model.
Roll Home is a finger-picked tale of a drunk stumbling and thinking his way home, while Coffee and The Way out of Here are songs taking place on Albany Highway.
The song, Wishing Well considers how the world outside will always be bigger than ourselves. It could be a lonely existence for a journeyman acoustic guitarist who has carved a path through a lyrical territory outside the greater industry and traversed places which house local histories, but Edmondson believed it was why his songs brimmed with life and resonance.
“This is a vignette corpus of lives lost, loves won and those that passed some by,” he said.“These are wry acoustic tales wrapped in a truly regional perspective … inextricably linked to a Western Australian experience. Chris Edmondson will perform at Broadwater Bar on Sunday from 5pm. S
