New recruits eager for new members

Bunbury Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is seizing the opportunity provided by the wet weather to invite new members to join before summer.

Two of the brigade’s newest members – who joined last September – say they have enjoyed their experience and hope others will join them.

“I’d been trying to figure out a way to help the community when I saw a story in the newspaper last year,” Mel Cox said.

“I live out on a farm and I’ve seen fires in the area, so I thought it’d be great to join the brigade.”

Pat Kane said he enjoyed being part of the brigade because of the diverse group of people.

“What we do is a serious thing but we have fun before and after,” he said.

“I wish I’d joined sooner.”

Brigade Capt. Terri Kowal said winter was the best time for new members because there were two training courses they had to complete before they could fight a fire.

“We train fortnightly on Wednesday evening plus monthly activities,” she said.

“Anyone is welcome, there are plenty of supportive roles if you don’t want to fight fires.”
