A newly formed group will hit the road for the first time this weekend in a bid to win over Augusta’s bike riding community.
The Augusta Bicycle Users Group will hold an inaugural social ride from the local Community Resource Centre to Jewel Cave and back on Sunday.
Group spokesman Paul Sofilas said similar riding brigades Australiawide had been successful and he believed it could be a coup for the local community and boost Augusta’s tourism market.
“There are more bikes sold in Australia than cars at the moment, and similar groups have been starting up around the country, so I thought it was time for Augusta,” he said.
“We hope locals and tourists alike will embrace it.”
Mr Sofilas said Sunday’s ride would be the litmus test for the future of the group, which he hoped could grow and hold monthly rides around the Cape Leeuwin region.
“I hope that we’d get a few formal members and have rides directed with different ride leaders and on different tracks and terrain,” he said.
“It would mostly be social and I hope there would be a ride which incorporated a picnic or something similar.”
He said at least 15 people had already expressed an interest in the formative trek, but he hoped more riders would come on board by Sunday.
The only prerequisite for the ride was a basic fitness level, roadworthy bike and enthusiasm, Mr Sofilas said.
Riders were asked to assemble at the Community Resource Centre on Allnut Terrace at 8.15am on Sunday.
