Margaret River wineries scooped half of the trophies on offer at last Friday’s Qantas Wine Show of WA held in Mount Barker.

Local drops snared nine of the 18 awards on offer, including the most successful exhibitor trophy which was won by Vasse Felix.

Vasse Felix also took out the prestigious award for the winery with the highest aggregate for their three top pointed wines.

Evans and Tate got top gongs for their 2009 Frankland River riesling, which took out the Best and Most Distinctive Regional Characteristics and Best Aged Riesling trophy.

Deep Woods Estate also captured two trophies at the show with its 2010 Reserve cabernet sauvignon – the Best Red Wine of the Show and Best Cabernet Sauvignon titles.

Windance Estate earned the Best White Blend trophy for its 2012 sauvignon blanc Semillon and the Three Oceans Wine Company won the Best Shiraz trophy for its 2009 Vita Novus shiraz.

Brookwood Estate won the Best Sauvignon Blanc class for its 2012 sauvignon blanc, which owner Lynn Mann said was a huge rap for the business.

“We’ve produced a straight varietal here, which is quite uncommon for sauvignon blanc in Margaret River, and I really think we’re giving New Zealand wines a run for their money,” she told the Times.
