Prevelly woman Rae Wilson has put her passion for swimming into a new instructional DVD aimed to help seniors and migrants conquer their fear of the water.
The physiotherapist – who specialises in hydrotherapy and teaching disabled swimmers – said strong emotions were often behind people’s unwillingness to embrace the sport, which apart from being a national pastime was also a great way to stay healthy.
“(The DVD) is really made for that level of fear,” Ms Wilson said.
“A lot of the problem for people is we put them in waist-deep water and they can drown in there.”
Her bilingual swimming program was designed to help novice swimmers start off in the bath in the privacy of their homes.
She made the DVD with the help of a Spanish-speaking traveller who provided the second language dub and had “a beautiful voice,” Ms Wilson said.
The instructional DVD is available from the Visitors Centre, the Margaret River Bookshop and the library.'The West Australian' is a trademark of West Australian Newspapers Limited 2012.
