‘Boy in a boat’ inspires winning poem

A Stormie Mills mural was the inspiration for the major prize winner in a writing competition for the Shore Lines Writing for Performance Festival.

Xan Ashbury, a sub editor at the Bunbury Herald, won with a poem, Right Down My Street, which was inspired by Stormie Mills’ big-scale painting of a boy in a boat on Parkfield Street.

“Shore Lines is such a fantastic event, ” Ms Ashbury said. “I hope that can continue to be supported and keep growing.”

Shore Lines committee spokeswoman Janice Mason said it was pleasing a local writer won the major prize from a field that included entries from across the country.

Ms Ashbury wins $1000 and a week at a writers’ retreat.

A selection of pieces will be performed in pop-up theatres across Bunbury in July.
