Artist's excellence recognised in first exhibition

Talented foot artist and Art Partners participant Roslyn Burns was recognised for artistic excellence at the weekend’s Who We Are art exhibition.

As We Are is a community initiative in WA which aims to bring joy and well-being to the lives of intellectually disabled artists.

The exhibition first started in 2002 as a one-off art award, but has since grown to become a significant event on the State’s art calendar.

Art Partners mentors Billie Griffiths and Tracey Musham said since Ms Burns joined the program two years ago she had significantly developed her artistic ability.

Ms Burns is limited in her movement but has mastered the art of literally painting with her foot.

She does not use paint brushes, but dips her toes into paint, which is then applied to the canvas.

The painting which won Ms Burns the Aurenda Art Award was titled Spring is Coming.

The impressive artwork depicts colourful flowers emerging from the snow of the NSW hills.

“I thought it was going to be a beautiful painting,” Mr Burns said.

Art Partners project officer Wanda Ariano said this was Ms Burns’ first submission into the As We Are exhibition.

“It is a really exciting opportunity for the Art Partners participants to have exposure in a prestigious Perth venue,” Mrs Ariano said.

“All works were judged on equal merit, technique and initial impact — not on the artists’ background.”
