Police are appealing to the public for help in their investigation into a horror crash in which two Italian backpackers were killed and three others are seriously injured in Manjimup on Monday.
A man and a woman — who were passengers — died at the scene on Seven Day Road, while the driver and two other passengers were taken to Royal Perth Hospital with severe injuries.
The five backpackers, all aged in their early 20s, were travelling west from A. & D. Guadagnino and Co. Orchards to Fonty’s Pool and Caravan Park when police believe the driver lost control of a white Holden Commodore sedan and hit a tree.
Other backpackers who had been working with the group at the orchard and were travelling behind the car rushed to the Wine and Truffle Company for help.
The RAC rescue helicopter airlifted the driver, who had sustained head injuries, and one of the passengers to Perth.
The third surviving passenger suffered a broken neck and was transported to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Domenic Guadagnino said the Italians had been working in the Manjimup area for the past few months and started at the family orchard three weeks ago.
“One minute I was spraying and the next they tell me the boys have had an accident,” he said.
“They are top guys, really good people, especially the one who got killed and his girlfriend.”
The accident happened in a default speed zone with a maximum speed of 110kmh.
Police and Major Crash Squad are continuing their investigation into the crash, and would like to hear from anyone that may have seen the vehicle in the area before the crash.
